Many innocent civillians were killed during the battle
Many of the civilians in Stalingrad were enlisted to help make barricades and other defensive objects to help keep the Germans out. The civilians of Stalingrad took the worst of the destruction because of the constant siege and street to street fighting. Many also faced starvation and a very long winter ahead of them. Much of Stalingrad was destroyed including many of the civilians’ homes. The horrors of war became an everyday part of life for the people of Stalingrad, and many things that were close to them were killed or destroyed. The civilians of Stalingrad helped immensely with protecting and fighting for Stalingrad. 300,000 civilians were killed over the course of the battle.
Life under seige
Meanwhile, the siege of Leningrad was taking place. The citizens of Leningrad experienced many horrors of their own. An interview took place with Natalia Poltoratskaia, whose grandmother was present during the siege of Leningrad.
